Pair of old antique iron clothesline clamps from an old farm estate in Wisconsin. They have most of the old black paint and are stamped with the US patent date of March 13, 1906.
We've been told that these were used with small diameter rope (such as clothesline) to control tension. The clamp would be mounted to the side of a building or pole and the clothes line would be passed through the clamp. When the clothes had been hung on the line and were low to the ground, you could walk over to the clamp and pull the end of the clothesline through, raising the clothes up to keep them out of the way.
These brackets measure about 3 1/4" long and 2 1/4" wide across the mounting face.
